Ending child and youth homelessness in Kenya and beyond
The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. – Barack Obama
Hiraya is a Filipino word meaning the fruit of one's hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
Hiraya Trust was founded by Lucy Naserian Nicholson, a Kenyan-born homeless advocate and activist who now resides in the UK. Lucy's journey began in her small hometown of Narok, Kenya, where she witnessed children and youth struggling on the streets due to poverty, broken families, domestic abuse, neglect, and policy failures.
Through volunteering and eventually starting her own organization, Lucy helped more than 30 street children and youths return to school. She pursued a Master's in Public Policy in the UK to understand how effective policies can prevent homelessness and transform lives at scale.
Lucy's vision is clear: to ensure that child and youth homelessness becomes a thing of the past, because children and youth are the hope and future of tomorrow.
She believes that with the right policies, holistic interventions, and advocacy, every child and youth can have hope for a brighter future in Kenya and beyond.
To end child and youth homelessness in Kenya and beyond by advocating for policies that address the root causes of homelessness, and by providing safe homes, education, mental health support, skills training, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
